I have been into Stoicism for a year now, reading the classics as well, and still I find it useful. Recommended if you are REALLY into Stoicism and want to learn a complete introduction of the philosophy (logic, physics, ethics). Most contemporary books focus only on the ethics part/5(14). Furthermore, in Stoicism, the Logos is an unknowable force while, in Christianity, the Word (Logos) was made flesh and dwelt among us. For the Stoics, a relationship with the Logos is distant, intellectual, and based on the ideas of duty and virtue.

In this paper we explore parallels between Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) and the applications of Stoic philosophy. We look especially at the foundations of the philosophy in Chrysippus, rather than just at the writings of the better known Roman Stoics. Similarities are found against very different historical backgrounds, although there are also important differences. ethics. In Brad Inwood's excellent and indispensable book,2 he makes reservation absolutely central to Stoic psychology, and he has been followed in this by Long and Sedley, and by Nussbaum.3 Inwood's book shed a flood of light on many areas in Stoic ethics because of his attention to the detailed psychology of action that the Stoics developed.

This is a detailed and masterly account of early Stoic psychology and its relation to Stoic ethics. Because of the Stoic insistence that all human action is based on reason, the first part of the book is concerned with logic, in the broad Stoic sense, as well as with psychology. Impulse, Inwood argues, depends upon, or rather is (cf. his THE. Ethics An International Journal of Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy Editors: Julia L. Driver, The University of Texas at Austin, and Connie S. Rosati, University of Arizona.
